Which FSSAI License Do You Need?

Basic License

Turnover up to ₹1.5 crore

For petty and small food businesses operating within a single state — restaurants and hotels, home-based kitchens and bakers, hawkers, temporary stall holders, small retailers, and tea or snack stalls. This is the entry-level FSSAI registration.

State License

Turnover ₹1.5 crore to ₹50 crore

For medium-sized food businesses operating within one state — restaurants, chain restaurants, cloud kitchens, mid-size manufacturers, processors, storage units, wholesalers, distributors and transporters above the basic threshold.

Central License

Turnover above ₹50 crore

For large food businesses, those operating in more than one state, importers and exporters, large cloud kitchens and cloud kitchen chains, e-commerce food operators, and businesses supplying to central government offices. A central license is mandatory at this scale.

What Is the Shops & Establishment Act?

The Shops and Establishment Act is a state law that regulates the working conditions of commercial establishments. Almost every shop, office, hotel, eatery, warehouse or workplace must register under the Act of the state where it operates. In states like Maharashtra and Gujarat the registration is commonly known as a Gumasta license.

Retail and wholesale shops, offices, restaurants and cafes, theatres, and other commercial establishments need this registration — whether run by a proprietor, partnership, LLP or company. Most states require the application to be filed Within 7 Days of commencing business.

What the Act Regulates

The Act governs working hours, weekly holidays, wages, overtime, leave, conditions of employment, and rules relating to women and young workers, ensuring fair treatment of employees.

Udyam Registration — Overview

What Is Udyam Registration?

Udyam registration is the Government of India's official process for recognising a business as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise (MSME). It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM). On completion, the enterprise receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate.

How Enterprises Are Classified

Classification is based on investment in plant & machinery or equipment and annual turnover. Micro: investment up to ₹1 crore and turnover up to ₹5 crore. Small: investment up to ₹10 crore and turnover up to ₹50 crore. Medium: investment up to ₹50 crore and turnover up to ₹250 crore.

Aadhaar-Based & Paperless

Udyam registration is fully online and self-declaration based. It is linked to the Aadhaar and PAN of the proprietor, partner or director, and integrates with the Income Tax and GST systems to verify investment and turnover automatically.
